Question

Why does an electric light burn even when there is no oxygen in the bulb?

Open in App
Solution

The term ‘burning’ is not appropriate for an electric light or a lamp. Scientifically speaking, burning process involves combination of a substance with the oxygen element to form oxide. But, an electric light only takes enough electric current to make a piece of metal glow brightly (incandescence) and give out visible light. If there is a tiny crack in the glass of the electric light, the oxygen present in the normal air will quickly make the filament burn away.
