Why does epidermal tissue have no intercellular space?

Solution
Epidermal tissue:
The outermost protective layer of cells is generally one cell layer thick.
The cells of this tissue are tightly packed so that no foreign substance can seep through the cell layer.
Reason for no intercellular space:
The tight arrangement of the cells leaves no intercellular space due to which the epidermis is able to provide protection against mechanical injury and pathogenic microbes.
This layer also prevents water loss as no space is present between the cells.
