Question

Why does inbreeding lead to homozygosity?

Open in App
Solution

Inbreeding

  1. Inbreeding increases homozygosity, which might increase the likelihood that harmful recessive alleles will be expressed and, as a result, reduce the fitness of the progeny.
  2. It increases the likelihood that children will inherit the same genes from both parents when closely related animals, such as father and daughter or sister and brother, are purposely bred.
  3. Increased homozygosity and consequent inbreeding result from this.
