Question

why does sodium form +1 ions and not +2 ions?

Open in App
Solution

Dear student

Sodium has the configuration : 2, 8, 1
It loses one electron and forms a stable octet configuration (2,8).

It does not form +2 ion, because it requires a lot of energy to get that configuration and moreover the stable configuration is obtained by losing one electron only.
