Question

Why does tautomerism take place?

Open in App
Solution

Tautomerism occurs because of the stability reasons. In the case of keto-enol Tautomerim, this conversion occurs because the keto form is, in general, more stable than its enol tautomer. The keto form is therefore favored at equilibrium because it is the lower energy form.
Tautomerim is shown by compounds having an acidic hydrogen atom adjacent to a double bond i.e,the compound is able to have resonance structures.
Generally Tautomerism is the shifting of hydrogen from one place to another by switching the covalent bond.
