why does the poem "the rime of the ancient mariner" have a supernatural touch in it? how does it change the tone of the poem?

The supernatural touch comes when the albatross is killed by the mariner and his spirit follows them. The spirit has come to seek revenge and the poem's tone changes from here. It becomes a sad story of guilt and condemnation.
