Question

Why does the tip of a lightning conductor have a pointed end?

Open in App
Solution

When the tips of a lightning conductor are pointy, there is a higher amount of electric charges accumulated at the tip.
Thus, the induction of charges on the lightning conductor by the cloud is more. This makes the electric field on the tip of the lightning conductor much stronger.
Hence, the charges from the clouds can flow through the lightning conductor more easily.
