Question

Why group 14 elements do not react with water?

Open in App
Solution

Group 14 elements react with water at certain temperature only. At low temperatures, neither water nor group 14 are very reactive. For eg., in carbon, Carbon-carbon bonds and hydrogen-oxygen bonds both have a high bond dissociation energy. These bonds need to be broken before a reaction can take place, and bond-breaking does not happen easily at room temperature.
