Question

Why is a triple bond the shortest?

Open in App
Solution

Bonding:

  • Chemical bonding is the process of combining two or more atoms, molecules, or ions to form a chemical compound.

Triple bond:

  • When compared to double and single bonds, triple bonds are the shortest.
  • Triple bonds are the strongest bonds so they have the shortest bond length because the length of a bond is inversely related to its strength.
  • The extra electrons in a triple bond exert more attractive forces on the nuclei, decreasing the bond's length.
  • The decreasing order of bond length is: Single bond > Double bond > Triple bond

Hence, the triple bond is the shortest among double and single bonds.
