Question

Why is an electric bulb not filled with air?

Open in App
Solution

Air contains oxygen which is chemically active.

If an electric bulb is filled with air, the tungsten filament of the bulb will undergo oxidation and will burn quickly.

Due to this reason, the electric bulbs are filled with nitrogen or argon gas.

These gases prevent oxidation and evaporation of the tungsten filament of the bulb.
