Question

Why is bond-making exothermic?

Open in App
Solution

Bonding:

  • Chemical bonding is creating a chemical compound by forming a chemical link between two or more atoms, molecules, or ions.

Exothermic:

  • Bond-breaking is said to be endothermic because energy is consumed to create bonds and released when bonds are broken.
  • And the process of bond formation is usually an exothermic process.
  • The presence of bonds is due to the bonded atoms' lower energy state than independent atoms.
  • As a result, heat should be discharged to reduce energy consumption or attain greater stability.
  • Exothermic reactions are those in which the creation of bonds improves the stability of the reaction.

Example:

  1. Hydrogen and Oxygen react to form Water.
  2. It is an example of an exothermic reaction.

2H2(g)+O2(g)2H2O(l)ΔH°(298K)=483.7kJmol-1

Hence, bond-making is exothermic because of the release of energy.
