Question

Why is:
(c) Sulphuric acid used in the preparation of \(HCl\) and \(HNO_{3}\)? Give equations in both cases.

Open in App
Solution

  • Concentrated sulphuric acid has a high boiling point (\(3380C\)).
  • In the reactions where heat is involved sulphuric acid does not evaporate easily and also it is easy to separate non-volatile starting material and volatile product.
Thus, it is used for preparing volatile acids like hydrochloric acid (\(HCl\)) and nitric acids (\(HNO_{3}\) ) from their salts by double decomposition reaction.
\(NaCl + H_{2}SO_{4} \rightarrow NaHSO_{4} +HCl\)

\( NaNO_{3} + H_{2}SO_{4} \rightarrow NaHSO_{4} +HNO_{3}\)
