Question

Why is the coefficient of volume expansion independent of temparature for liquids?

Open in App
Solution

On heating a substance kinetic energy of molecules increases. In the case of liquids, the intermolecular forces prevent the expansion of liquids to be noticeable.

But intermolecular forces in gases are much weaker than in liquids. So they expand even on small heating.

That is why the coefficient of volume expansion is independent of temperature for liquids but depends on the temperature for gases.
