Question

Why is the electrolysis of sulphuric acid called electrolysis of water?

Open in App
Solution

Sulphuric acid :

  • Acidic water is a diluted version of sulphuric acid.
  • The electrolysis of dilute sulfuric acid is also known as acidic water electrolysis.

Water electrolysis:

  • Pure water is a non-conductor of electricity and does not allow for self-electrolysis. Because water is polar covalent, adding acid causes it to dissociate into ions.
  • Sulphuric acid is colorless and odorless, and it is miscible in water. Electricity is used in the electrolysis process.
  • It is water-soluble and when dissolved in water, it produces heat. It's a common ingredient in fertilizer production.
  • It's also employed in wastewater treatment and chemical production.
