In order to increase their efficiency in the transport of oxygen

  • The cell organelle called mitochondria degenerates in mature RBCs .
  • If it were present in the cell, it would have consumed the oxygen being carried for themselves.
  • The RBC would not have been able to deliver it to the tissues.
