Question

Why is ordinary water a good conductor of electricity?

Open in App
Solution

  • Pure water is a bad conductor of electricity due to the absence of ions (impurities like salt) while ordinary water contains dissolved impurities or dissolved salts due to this it conducts electricity.
  • Because ordinary water contains ions of dissolved salts which help in the conduction of electricity.
  • When a battery of positive and negative poles is placed in it, the positive ions are attracted by the negative pole, and the negative ions by the positive pole which creates a closed circuit.
  • Hence, ordinary water is a good conductor of electricity.
