Why is oxytocin called 'Birth hormone’?

Oxytocin:

  1. It is a neuropeptide hormone produced by the hypothalamus and released by the posterior pituitary gland.
  2. During childbirth oxytocin stimulates vigorous contraction of the uterus, therefore it is called ‘Birth hormone'.
  3. It plays a role in the period, childbirth, reproduction, etc.
