Question

Why SO3 is not added directly to the water?

Open in App
Solution

Sulfur Trioxide (SO3) is not added directly to the water (H2O) to form Sulphuric acid (H2SO4) as:

  • When it is added directly to water the formation of Sulphuric acid is seen and the reaction is highly exothermic which could cause burning.
  • It results in the production or formation of the dense fog of sulphuric acid which is very hard or difficult to condense.
  • Sulphuric acid formed is highly corrosive in nature.
