Why is solid ferric chloride stored in air tight bottles?
It is a deliquescent substance.
Certain water- soluble substances, when exposed to the atmosphere at ordinary temperature, absorb moisture from the atmospheric air to become moist, and ultimately dissolve in the absorb water, forming a saturated solution.Such substance is called deliquescent substance and the phenomenon is called deliquescence. E.g., caustic soda, caustic potash, zinc chloride, etc.
Solid anhydrous FeCl3 is a deliquescent substance which absorbs moisture from the air and then dissolves in absorbed moisture to change it into a liquid state. So, FeCl3 is stored in air tight bottles.
