Question

Why is sulphuric acid not used during the reaction of alcohols with KI?

Open in App
Solution

KI and H2SO4

In the presence of sulphuric add H2SO4, KI produces HI

The reaction is given below:

2KI+H2SO42KHSO4+2Hl

Oxidising nature of H2SO4

SinceH2SO4 is an oxidising agent, it oxidizesHI to l2.

The reaction is given below:

2HI+H2SO4I2+SO2+2H2O

Therefore, the reaction between alcohol and Hl to produce alkyl iodide cannot occur.
So, sulphuric acid is not used during the reaction of alcohols with KI.

Instead, a non-oxidising acid such as H3PO4 is used.
