Question

Why is the actual yield of ATP less than the theoretical yield?

Open in App
Solution

ATP:

  1. Cellular respiration is the process in which a cell breaks down glucose in the presence of oxygen, to produce energy in the form of ATP.
  2. Adenosine triphosphate or ATP is a molecule that carries energy in the cells.
  3. During the last stage of anaerobic respiration, some protons leak across the mitochondrial membrane back into the matrix.
  4. Due to this, the proton motive force which spins the headpiece of ATP synthase to produce ATP gets decreased, hence less ATP produced.
