Of the enormous solar energy, plants are able to utilize and absorb only a fraction of energy. As per the 10% law of energy transfer, only 10% of energy passes from one trophic level to the successive trophic level. Energy is always dissipated in the process and therefore a comparatively less amount of energy is available for the successive trophic level. Hence, the pyramid of energy always remains upright with base showing large energy value while in successive levels it reduces considerably.
