Why is the suffix “-ase” used commonly in enzyme names, for example alcohol dehydrogenase, lactic acid dehydrogenase??

The suffix 'ase' indicates an enzyme and is added to the end of substrate name on which it is acting or the type of reaction it is catalysing.. e.g. maltase breaks maltose, Dehydrogenase enzyme catalyzes hydrogen removal..
