Question

Why is the triple bond not as thrice strong as single bond

Open in App
Solution

Dear student,
Bond strength is inversely bond length. For triple bond to be as strong as three times of the single bond the bond length must be 3 times less than that of a single bond. But there's restriction imposed by the electrons of two species which repel each other as well as by the nucleus of the reacting species which limits the bond length as well as strength.
