Question

Why is transpiration important for plants? Explain the factors that affect the rate of transpiration.

Solution

Explanation:

  1. Plants absorb water and minerals through the roots from the surrounding.
  2. The absorption of water occurs due to various forces.
  3. When the water is lost through transpiration, force is created which leads to the absorption of water.
  4. Transpiration is the process of loss of water in the form of water vapour from the aerial parts of the plant.

Importance of transpiration:

  1. Due to transpiration, water gets evaporated and the heat that is required is obtained from the plants itself.
  2. This results in cooling effect, when it is hot outside.
  3. Transpiration helps in maintaining the concentration of sap inside the plant.

Factors affecting the rate of transpiration:

The following factors affect the rate of transpiration-

Sunlight

  1. Transpiration rate increases when there is maximum light as the stomata is open during daytime.
  2. At night, light is not present therefore transpiration decreases.

Temperature

  1. During hot days, temperature is maximum which results is evaporation of water.
  2. Therefore, the transpiration is faster.

Wind

  1. Transpiration is faster when the wind is moving fast as the water molecules get carried away by the wind.

Humidity-

  1. Transpiration is reduced when the air is humid as air cannot hold any water molecules when it already has moisture.
