Question

Why lyophilic colloids are more stable than lyophobic colloids?

Open in App
Solution

Lyophilic & Lyophobic:

  • Lyo means liquid and philic means loving. So, lyophilic is liquid loving in nature.
  • Any colloids that are loving liquid are called lyophilic.
  • Example of lyophilic colloids is starch, protein and gum.
  • Lyo means liquid and phobic means hating. So, lyophobic means liquid hating.
  • Any colloids that are hating the liquid s called lyophobic.
  • Examples of lyophobic colloids are metal, metal sulphides and oxides.

Stabilty of lyophilic:

  • Lyophilic sols are more stable than lyophobic sols. This is because lyophilic colloids are highly solvated, which means that colloidal particles are enclosed in a sheath of the liquid in which they are distributed.
  • When a lyophilic sol is mixed with a lyophobic sol, the lyophilic particles form a protective layer around the lyophobic particles, shielding them from electrolytes.
  • The disperse phase of lyophilic colloids has a high affinity for the dispersion medium, whereas the disperse phase of lyophobic colloids has a low affinity for the dispersion medium.
