Why plants produce a large number of seeds?

All the seeds of a fruit should be able to germinate to produce new plants. But, some seeds never germinate to produce new plants. Some seeds are able to germinate, but plants die before maturation. So, to overcome these problems, plants end up producing a large number of seeds.
