Question

Why propanone has higher boiling point than propanal

Open in App
Solution

Dear student,

Propanone has a higher boiling point than propanal.
As shown below:
The boiling point of the Propanal is 47°C
The boiling point of propanone is 57°C
Generally, ketones have a higher boiling point than aldehydes. As ketones are more polar than aldehydes. So, the intermolecular force of attraction is higher for ketones as compared to aldehyde. The reason for the higher polarity of the ketone is the electron releasing alkyl group on both sides of carbonyl carbon.
Higher polarity→→Higher intermolecular force of attraction →→more energy will require to break the intermolecular force of attraction→→high boiling points.
