Why replication is not continuous on the DNA template with $5^{'} \to 3^{'}$ direction?

Solution

Only a short segment of DNA can be produced when DNA synthesis occurs in 5'to 3'direction. These short hanging segments are called Okazaki fragments. As a result, they are not synthesized continuously but in breaks.
