Question

Why scandium shows +3 oxidation state only

Open in App
Solution

Dear student,

Electronic configuration of Scandium = 3d1 4s2
Sc does not show a +2 oxidation state because to obtain a +2 state it has to lose two electrons from the 4s orbital, which makes its configuration 3d1 which is not stable and so this electron is also lost to attain noble gas configuration. Therefore, Sc shows a +3 oxidation state and not +2.
