Question

Why should curd and other sour foodstuffs (like lemon juice, etc.) not be kept in metal containers (such as copper and brass vessels)?

Solution

All acids are sour in nature. The curd is made from milk which is slightly acidic in nature(as it contains lactic acid). We know that acids react easily with metals to give salt and hydrogen gas. When kept in copper or brass vessels, curd(and other acidic food items) reacts with copper and forms toxic compounds which may be unfit for human consumption, and may cause food poisoning. Thus it is not advisable to keep curd and other acidic or sour food items in copper or brass vessels.

Since foodstuffs like curd is acidic in nature hence they react with metals to give hydrogen gas , which spoils the food and makes it unfit for consumption and if ingested then it degrades our health.

When sour substance like curd are kept in metallic container the lactic acid present in them reacts with metals which leads to corrosion of the container as well as formation of harmful salts that cannot be consumed or eaten.
