Question

Why the metal with greater coefficient of linear expansion lies on the convex side while heating a bimetallic strip

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student,

A metallic strip is made up of metal joined together either by welding or grinding and they always stay in contact.

When Heated Both the metals tend to increase in length where one of them tend to increase more than the other one as it has a linear coefficient of expansion higher than the other while staying in contact also.

For doing so, they will increase in length while taking shape of a curved surface where the more expanding metal takes the shape of the convex surface and the other takes the shape of concave one.
