Why where scientists critical of John Newlands Law Of Octaves?

Open in App
Solution

Newland's Law of octave was not a good model for explaining properties of elements and relationships among them.
  • Several known elements did not fit in the pattern.
  • Elements were arranged in the order of increasing atomic mass.
  • The arrangement was not applicable throughout, but till calcium only.
  • Those elements discovered later did not follow law of octaves.
  • Cobalt and Nickle were grouped with Fluorine and Chlorine, but difference in the properties were not explained.
  • Iron being a metal was placed with oxygen and sulphur which are non-metal.
