So it all boils down to distance and displacement.

As you can see in the diagram the coin is only displaced by 15m down. But to reach there it's going up in air and then coming down. So obviously distance travelled by coin is more than the displacement. Hence average speed > average velocity f or average velocity to be greater than average speed the net displacement should be greater than net distance in a time interval. we know that this is not possible.... $\therefore$ Average velocity can never be greater than average speed.
