Solution

Cell: A cell is a structural and functional unit of life.

Plant cell :

Plant cells are rigid and rectangular in shape because of the presence of a cell wall.

Plant cells have different cell organelles as follows :

1. Cell wall :

  • Cell wall is an outer rigid covering of the cell which is made up of cellulose.
  • Cell wall provides protection to the cell against mechanical shocks.
  • It gives shape and rigidity to the plant cell.

2. Cell membrane :

  • The cell membrane is a semipermeable membrane just inside the cell wall which concludes the protoplasm of the cell.
  • The cell membrane protects the cell.
  • It gives a definite shape to the cell.
  • Regulate the transport of substances in and out of the cell.

3. Cytoplasm :

  • The cytoplasm is a jelly-like substance that contains the cell organelles.
  • The cytoplasm contains membrane-bound organelles and cell inclusions.
  • It contains the essential element and nutrients required for the growth and development of the cell.

4. Nucleus :

  • The nucleus is a dense body found in the cell which controls all the activities of the cells.
  • The nucleus is made up of nuclear membrane, nucleoplasm, nucleolus, and chromosomes which contain genetic materials.

5. Mitochondria :

  • Mitochondria is a double-layered cell organelle that is one of the energy-producing organelles in the cell.
  • Mitochondria produces and stores energy in the form of ATP by cellular respiration.
  • Mitochondria are called as “powerhouse of the cell”.

6. Vacuoles :

  • Vacuoles are the membrane-bound cell organelles that are used for storage.
  • These are present in both animal and plant cells but plant cells contain larger vacuoles than the animal cell.
  • Vacuoles store food as well as the essential nutrients needed for cells.
  • Vacuoles also store waste material produced after the metabolic activities in the cell.

7. Plastids :

  • Plastids are the large cell organelles present only in plant cells.
  • There are three types of plastids: chromoplast, leucoplast, and chloroplast.
  • The plastids which are colorless are called leucoplast, which contains different colors are called chromoplast, and which contains a green pigment chlorophyll is called the chloroplast.
