In the case of asexual reproduction, the cell division taking place is mitosis and not meiosis. Mitosis produces 2 diploid cells from 1 diploid cell. The offspring have the exact same genetic makeup. In the case of sexual reproduction, sex cells undergo reduction division (meiosis) and produce 4 haploid cells from 1 diploid cell. Two haploid cells from 2 different parents fuse to form a diploid zygote.
