Solution

Biosphere reserve:

  1. A biosphere reserve is a designation granted to an area for the conservation of biosphere resources and the betterment of man-environment relations. Example- Sunderbans, Manas biosphere reserve etc.
  2. A biosphere reserve is mainly divided into 3 zones:
    • Core zone: The innermost zone is called a core zone. The core zone of a biosphere reserve is devoted to the strict protection of wildlife. No human activity is allowed in the core zone.
    • Buffer zone: The middle zone is called the buffer zone. The buffer zone surrounds the core zone. Only minimal human activity is permitted in the buffer zone. In the buffer zone, research, environmental education, and tourism are permitted.
    • Transition zone: The outermost zone is called the transition zone. Several non-destructive human activities, such as tribal settlements and crop production, are permitted since they are vital for tribal survival.
