On 13th April 1919, individuals assembled in a park in Amritsar which was known as the Jalllianwala Bagh, to challenge these arrests by the Britishers. The peaceful public meeting was gone to by men, ladies, and youngsters. Before the meeting could start General O' Dyer, a British military official, positioned a regiment of soldiers at the only passage of the Jallianwala Bagh, and announced the gathering unlawful and without notice, and ordered his warriors to fire recklessly. The main objective of General Dyer behind the Jallianwala Bagh slaughter was to 'produce an ethical impact', to create in the minds of satyagrahis a sensation of fear and terror. The firing went on for ten minutes, till all the ammunition was depleted. In excess of 1,000 individuals were executed and over double that number injured.
