Origin of seed plants started in late Devonian. Progymnosperms converted into seed plants. Following three evolutionary trends were important in evolution of seed:
1. Evolution of integuments
2. Evolution from homospory to heterospory
​3. Evolution of structures which receive pollens. This reduced dependence on water for pollination process.
