In the 7th century CE, the Nizamshahis of Ahmednagar and the Adilshahis of Bijapur ruled over many cities that are now part of Maharashtra.

• Both of these houses belonged to the Deccan Sultanate. The Mughals, a powerful force in northern India, made their mark in Khandesh by establishing their dominion.
• Apart from the Adilshahis, Nizamshahis, and Mughals, Maharashtra was home to Siddhis, descendants of individuals who came from East Africa, and Topkars, who got their name from their fancy headgears.
