• It is a collective term that describes three similar processes which are phagocytosis also known as cell eating, pinocytosis also known as cell drinking and receptor-mediated endocytosis.
• The intake of materials through the process of endocytosis can be extracellular fluid, droplets and macromolecules.
• This process requires the expenditure of energy and can be also considered as a form of active transport.
