The fact that the indigo farmers were forced by the European planters to grow indigo even when it was detrimental for the farmers became the reason for the Indigo revolt in Bengal.
These farmers were also asked to sell their plants for cheap so that the planters could make a profit by selling for a higher rate to the industries in Europe.
Factories were burnt down during the revolt.
Digambar Biswas and Bishnu Charan Biswas led the revolt. Eventually the ryots of Nadia district gave up indigo cultivation in September 1859.
To get the problems of the indigo farmers the attention they deserved, the newspaper Hindu Patriot spoke about it. Also. a play named
Nil Darpan was written in Bengali by Dinabandhu Mitra.
Meanwhile, the government set up an indigo commission in 1860, whose recommendations became a part of Act VI of 1862.
However, the indigo planters shifted to Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.
