Kidneys:

  1. Kidneys are a pair of bean shaped organs that are present in the lower back of a human body.
  2. They play a major role in filtering out urea from the blood, which is formed during metabolic activities.
  3. The structural and functional unit of kidney is nephron.

Acute kidney injury:

  1. It is also known as acute renal failure.
  2. Acute kidney injury is a succesive loss of renal function which is mainly identified by oliguria and electrolyte and fluid imbalance.
  3. It occurs when our kidneys are unable to filter products from the blood.
  4. This can cause serious accumulation of toxic substances in the body.
  5. This condition may be caused because of different reasons chiefly categorised as intrinsic, pre-renal and post renal.
  6. The root cause can be identified and treated to stop the degradation of kidneys.
  7. Dialysis can prove to be beneficial for bridging the time gap required to treat these basic causes.
