Write about how sparrows were destroyed in China. What should be our concern towards their conservation?
In 1958 an incident happened in China where there was destruction of a large number of sparrow populations. Initially their crop yield was double the amount of crops grown. Later it decreased and was not meeting their needs. There was an imbalance between demand and supply. A Chinese farmer thought that sparrows might be pecking away the harvest from their warehouse. A labour force was mobilised into an anti-sparrow army. People started poisoning, trapping and killing sparrows in large numbers. They started shooting sparrows. They would beat the drums to scare sparrows and fly them off. Sparrow nests were torn, eggs were broken, nestlings were killed. Many of such human activities completely destroyed the sparrow population in China.
Sparrows can be conserved by the following methods-
Creating a noise free zone helps in welcoming the sparrow population.
Usage of herbicides (herbal pesticides) instead of chemical pesticides will be non-toxic to sparrows. This is because chemical pesticides are one of the main cause for destruction of sparrows and useful insects.
By using biological control methods we can conserve the sparrow population.
