mechanical waves required medium to propagate.take a jar attach a vaccum pump and place a cork above the opening.with the cork attach a bell.now shake the bell you can hear the ringing sound.start the vaccum pump.after vaccuming the jar again shake the jar.now you cannot hear the ringing sound as their is no medium for it to propagate.
