Solution

(a) Autotrophic living organisms are those which have an autotrophic mode of nutrition. This means that they can prepare their own food and are not dependent on others for it. For example − Plants. Plants are autotrophs as they make their own food via the process of photosynthesis.

(b) A balanced diet is a diet that includes an adequate amount of all necessary nutrients (carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins and minerals) and fibers required by the body.

(c) Assimilation is the process by which the absorbed food is utilized by different parts for the growth and repair of the body.

(d) Roots absorb water from the soil through osmosis. Osmosis is the movement of water molecules across a semi permeable membrane, from a region of high concentration to a region of low concentration of water. Roots have several outgrowths, called root hairs which increase the water absorbing surface area of the roots. Root hairs have concentrated fluid inside them i.e., low water concentration. So, when they make contact with the soil (having high water concentration) the water present in the soil enters inside the roots through osmosis.

(e) The factors required by plants for making food are:

(i) Light

(ii) Water

(iii) Chlorophyll

(iv) Carbon dioxide
