(a) The variety of living organisms present in different ecosystems of the Earth is called biodiversity.

(b) Biodiversity is important for the overall health of an ecosystem as it provides for all the basic needs of living things. In case of humans, basic necessities such as food, clothing, shelter, and other important necessities such as medicines are provided by the biodiversity.

(c) Living things differ in their shape, size and body parts. The difference is also seen in the eating habits, habitats, life patterns etc.

(d) The main reasons for the decline in the biodiversity are hunting, habitat destruction, population explosion, environmental pollution and greater demand of land for building houses, factories and agricultural production.

(e) The efforts being made to protect endangered species are:

• Enactment of laws to help protect rare species of plants and animals

• Creation of wildlife sanctuaries and national parks

• Protection and nurture of specific species of plants and animals in Botanical gardens or Zoological parks
