Lactic acid is the natural acid produced by muscles during anaerobic respiration. It helps in producing a little amount of energy when oxygen is unavailable for energy production during increased work by anaerobic respiration. This helps in continuation of the muscle work without any obstruction. If accumulated in muscles it results in muscle pain. In increased cases, it is transported to the liver and help in the formation of glucose by gluconeogenesis. This glucose is sent to muscle for energy production for doing work. This process is called Cori's cycle.
