Write briefly about the biological importance of Myoglobin.

Myoglobin is the oxygen binding molecule present in the muscles. Its structure is similar to that of hemoglobin but this doesn't help in oxygen transfer. Its main function is to store oxygen in the muscle tissue so that it can be used in oxygen deprived states such as in severe exercises, breath holding conditions. So it helps in prolonged muscle function without fatigue. As it is high in red muscle they perform more work without fatigue.
