Write differences between:

(i) Erythrocytes and leucocytes (function)

Erythrocytes:

  1. They are also called the red blood corpuscles (RBCs).
  2. They contain a protein called hemoglobin which is responsible for carrying oxygen to various tissues of the body thereby making the RBCs appear red.
  3. They are biconcave cells that lack nucleus and are formed in the red bone marrow through a process called erythropoiesis.

Leucocytes:

  1. They are also referred to as the white blood cells (WBCs) which lack hemoglobin and hence appear colorless.
  2. They are nucleated cells thatinfection-fighting are amoeboid in shape and produced in the bone marrow.

The erythrocytes are involved in transporting oxygen to various parts of the body from the heart and for transporting carbon dioxide from the tissues back to the lungs for exhalation.

The leucocytes are the infection fighting cells that are involved in phagocytosis of infectious agents, formation of antibodies, and inflammatory responses.
